By far the hardest part of being in Iran is if you are brining your own car. You do not need a local guide but you will need a carnet (option 1) or as option 2 you will need to contact the guy I say on the page. Option 2 is much less hassle but obviously you are handing over a lot of money to a guy you never met before. We used him and it all worked out very well. As you asked, neither way is cheap! This money you give as option 2 is fixed, non-refundable.
You need to be the owner of the car you bring into Iran and your driving license needs to also match to that name and the same on your personal visa. Basically the same name needs to be on all of them. This part is completely seperate from your own personal visa.
