Yes once you have bought the permit you automatically have a guide. Definitely no need for a tour but without a tour you just have to buy it yourself and get there yourself both of which are fairly easy. In my opinion you don’t need a porter at all. Bring a small backpack with water/food yourself as you are gone for only half a day and for an hour of that with the gorillas you are not moving. The last thing is that if you are on your own or there is 2 of you, you should easily be able to get a lift in a 4×4 off somebody from the HQ/meeting point to the start of the trek. With a bigger group this may be more difficult and you should have your own transport.

Thanks for the great info. In other words can you do it without an organized tour as long as you have a permit for the day you want to go? Does that permit include you tracker for the day? I know porters are not included but advised.

When we were in Africa, we debated going to see the Gorillas. Since they cost so much, we decided to go on a safari in Kenya instead…however, we’re really regretting not seeing these amazing creatures.

Cheers
