In general the treks are not hard at all. There is very little big climbing in them and is for the main part flat. There is a little up and down but no big hills or mountains. It can be hot though depending on the time of year. The tsigys up the north can some steps and a climb down and up through a small gorge but you can see them without doing any of that. It is worth a walk through the forests anyway everywhere as the animals are amazing and usually there isn’t any big mystery in finding them. Some of the walks can be a few hours so just be sure to ask before you start and maybe the guide will be able to keep you on the flat sections. Even if you just do the north it will still be brilliant and you will see plenty of animals and landscape. The drive south west from Tana is also good as the road is the best in the country and around Toliara is reasonably touristy.

If you hire a driver in Tana then they can sort out the hotels as you go as they know people in the different towns. We did that and the hotels were of a decent standard, around 3 stars or so. We asked for a guide in our hotel when we arrived in Tana and then negotiated directly with them. This would be the best as any place that you deal with from outside the country will be more expensive. Obviously there is a little groundwork to be done when you arrive but it is cheaper.

Hi Ross
Your blog is awesome. Would love to visit Madagascar early August with hubbie and 12 and 15 year old kids. 2 week trip. My hubbie is not as adventurous as the rest of us. I do have a physical disability so walking and climbing is challenging but if it’s flat I can do it. ARe the treks through the parks really hard? Also what if we just did the north to make it a little more “easier” for my husband who is not a huge adventure seeker? Would we miss a lot? Otherwise I will just force him. We do love ocean, diving and surfing and beach so thinking he and us would love the north.Also love animals.
Your advice would be very appreciated.
Also is there anyone that I can hook up with that can help me plan the trip…driver…nice hotels etc.

No problem. As said before it is 3 weeks of what I talked about in the post. Other than hikes and going into caves with tarantula’s and millions of bats I didn’t do any adventure activities!
