Thanks. Renting a car is a good idea, it gives you good independence. You are right about the parking though. It is a pain. I got a ticket in Dubrovnik and I was well away from the city centre and I didn’t even know you had to pay that far away on a Saturday night. Take it that you need to pay almost everywhere. It was busy for me and I wasn’t there during peak season. Still though I wouldn’t let the parking not make you rent a car. You may have to walk for an extra 5minutes in towns as you are parking outside them but it is worth it.

Loved the tips! I’m planning a 10-day trip to Croatia in june and I’m considering renting a car to optimize time. The only thing you didn’t mention and it would be of enormous help is about parking. I’ve read that it’s almost impossible in places like Split ( I want to go to Hvar) and Pula and Dubrovnik look like that too.

Thanks for your comment. Sorry for the late reply but I was on holidays driving a rickshaw with very limited internet so only came back yesterday.
There were two of us and we rented a car for 10days which was reasonably cheap. We arrived in Split and made our way north to the Plitvice Lakes (really nice) and also to Istria before heading on to Zagreb. Istria is definitely worth going to see. The towns are very historic and all on the coast. They are really nice just to stroll around and enjoy the atmosphere. It is worth noting that I was there at the end of October so it was cold so I did not do any water activities but this doesn’t take away from the fact that Istria was probably the best spot.
Zagreb is nice but it is still a city. We made our way south then though Bosnia to Sarajevo. There was not much on that road to see really and the roads are worse than in Croatia. We did some rafting but it may as well have been in a bath!! Sarajevo is worth spending a day there to see what happened during the civil war. We travelled then through Mostar (nice but touristy) and onto Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik is very nice but super touristy. It is like they don’t have any other industry there so all shops etc are there just for tourists. The old city though is done up very well and there is a good atmosphere although when big cruise ships come in the place gets overrun with buses and tourists who are only there for a few hours. I wasn’t a big fan of the city because of it.
We spent around one day in each place with a few hours driving in the morning depending on the distance. We spent a few days in Istria. This sort of trip may not be for everybody but with the flights it made sense for us at the time. I haven’t been to Slovenia, Montenegro yet so I cant say anything about them.
Places like Dubrovnik will be packed during August and to a lesser extent Istria (Italian tourists) so the later you leave it the better from that point of view but of course it will be a little colder in September.

I really enjoyed reading about your trip to Croatia. I am planning a trip in August/September. Initially my intentions were to go to Slovenia lake bled and Ljbliana and Croatia. As I began exploring travel sites I discovered Montenegro, Bosnia and Macedonia, ll which i am intrigued by for different reasons. i would love to know more about your trip. How long you stayed in each spot, were you stayed etc. Love your advise about the cities. Could use help in planning all this.

Exactly how much time did it require u to compose “Croatia”?
