Stuary – To be honest I think almost all the B&B’s are to a good standard. I don’t really do accommodation here but I have done that route a few times in different ways and I can’t remember the names of any B&B’s but all of them were decent and helpful. None were even below average so they didn’t stick in my mind.

High Ross – we are flying into Cork and want to explore the area so are considering the “West Cork (Cork City, Baltimore, Mizen Head, Bantry), 200km, 4-7days” You wrote about. We will be traveling by car and wondered if you could recommend any B&B’s / Small hotels that would make sense along the way. Thanks!

Yeah not the best time to be coming but if it doesn’t rain then it will be really good. Dingle to Donegal is a long way and depends on how much time you have. The highlights would be (from south to north) Dingle, Lahinch, Doolin (surfing, trad music, coastal walks). Bunratty castle near Limerick is worth a pop in. The Burren in Co. Clare is good for walks. Galway is great for all music and nightlife and also has lots of history. Some of the best mountains are Croagh Patrick and Mweelrea near Westport. Brilliant views – on clear days, and plenty of lovely beaches there. Westport/Achill Island has the Greenway cycling route to Achill – 42km one way. Sligo is one of the best places to surf in Ireland with plenty of great beaches. Can get 50ft waves at Mullughmore. Bundoran is the main place for that. Donegal is very wild. Slieve League cliffs past Killybegs are almost 2000ft high! That is a quick summary, remember on the 25th Dec, nothing will be open. The 26th will be a very busy night wherever you are.

I’m taking my 15yo son to a ireland for the first time over Christmas. I have been many times. I know it’s a challenging time with weather and holiday closing a. Can you suggest a few days itinerary from Dingle to Donegal that includes traditional music, active-oriented sights, fun stuff for a sporty boy & fit mom.

That meteor shower sounds amazing. I was in a kayak for that bio-luminescence in west Cork on a clear night with only the stars and the purple glow from the water as light. Eveybody who is down there should do it. Any experience on the sea in Cork is a good one.

Thanks for sharing a great article promoting our lovely country. It’s a pity that more people don’t get out and experience our amazing countryside and coastline. I’ve been priviliged to have been able to kayak almost the entire West Cork coastline (not in one go, I might add!) and the perspective you get from the water is completely different to a land perspective. Also one of the most memorable moments of this summer was watching a meteor shower at Drombeg Stone Circle at midnight. Truly amazing! These are experiences you will never have sitting in front of a T.V.
