Suggestions about pubs was especially helpful as I love to visit the less touristy places when I am a tourist — the only way you really get to meet the locals.
Also Phoenix Park sounds like a beautiful jewel not to be missed.
Thank you!!!

If you are only going to be in the city then bringing a car will be too much hassle and will cost you a lot (€2-€3 per hour to park). Either flying or the fast boat would be better. Irish Ferries have a Seacat that takes less than 2hrs. Stenaline ferry also has a a day trip deals from Holyhead to Dun Laoighre (or Dublin Port). For €40 you have a return journey and admission to places like Guinness Storehouse. If you plan on going places outside the city like Glendalough or Newgrange then a car would be better. If you are not close to Holyhead and plan on staying in Dublin city then flying will maximise your time in Dublin

We were thinking of a day trip to Dublin. Would it be best to take a car ferry over so we have our own transportation?
